OBITUARY Diamond Drill (Crystal Falls newspaper) Sep 15 1900 "Captain Gulgreen Killed: Singled Out By Fate Among A Crowd of Miners"
An electric shock would not have surprised the people of our quiet little city more yesterday forenoon than the announcement that Andrew Gulgreen had been killed while underground in the Columbia mine this morning. The Captain was mine inspector for this county and drove over from Iron River during the forenoon on a tour of inspection, it being his custom to take a trip once each month. He didn't come into town but turned off at the forks of the road and visited the Columbia, intending to make that his forenoon's work and then come into town for dinner. He tied his team and went underground in company with Captain Buzzo, and together they went on a tour of inspection of the underground workings. They had about finished their work and were walking down one of the "subs" on the bottom level where they met Lewis Ashleman and Geo. Myer who were at work putting in some timber. The Captain was well acquainted with the men and he and Captain Buzzo stopped to talk with them a moment. The place which they stood was apparently as safe as the best kept room in any house and Mr. Gulgreen had just complimented Captain Buzzo upon the condition of the mine and mentioned the fact that no bad accidents had occurred at the property under his management. The words had barely cooled when a small chunk of ore fell from the back of the drift and struck Mr. Gulgreen on the back of the head breaking his neck. Captain Buzzo was standing so close to him that the falling ore struck and broke the skin on his hand hanging at his side. The other two men were also very close and it seems as if fate had picked out Mr. Gulgreen and told him that his time had come.
The body was brought immediately to the surface and the coroner and undertaker were summoned. The coroner empaneled a jury yesterday afternoon and after listening to the facts in the case a verdict of accidental death was brought in.
Captain Gulgreen was a well known citizen of Iron county and to know him was to respect him. He was kind and hospitable to all and true to his friends. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss.
The remains were taken in charge by the Masonic lodge, of which he was a member, and were sent to Iron River this morning where the funeral will be held tomorrow. The local Masons and Maccabees will attend.
